SunCubes, an innovative startup aiming to revolutionize energy transmission, has announced the closing of a €1.1 million Seed funding round. This investment will allow the company to develop the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of a groundbreaking laser-based in-flight charging system for drones.
The operation was jointly led by RoboIT, the National Technology Transfer Hub for robotics and industrial automation, established on the initiative of CDP Venture Capital and Pariter Partners, and by CrossConnect, a program of CDP Venture Capital’s National Accelerator Network, with co-investors Plug and Play Tech Center and ELIS.
Founded by a team of young engineers and incubated at PoliHub, SunCubes is accelerated by the ESA BIC Milan program. With the goal of revolutionizing energy transmission, the company focuses on developing innovative long-range wireless charging solutions.
“With this funding, SunCubes takes a decisive step toward creating a technology that will radically change the way we think about drone autonomy and their future applications,” said Alberto Chiozzi, CEO of SunCubes.
The system developed by SunCubes is based on cutting-edge laser technology. A transmitter converts electrical energy into a laser beam, which is then reconverted into electricity through a receiver installed on the drone. Designed to be plug & play and compatible with the most common drones, the system solves the problem of limited flight autonomy, paving the way for perpetual flight and uninterrupted operations.
This fully wireless technology eliminates the restrictions imposed by physical connectors and enables advanced applications: urban drone deliveries without charging stops, continuous industrial monitoring, and even pioneering space-based solutions.
Leading SunCubes is a team of young talents graduated in Aerospace Engineering and Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano: Alberto Chiozzi (CEO), Federico Ognibene (COO), Davide Russo (CIO), Tommaso Aresi (CTO), and Angelo Lannutti (CCO). United by a passion for innovation, the founders aim to redefine the boundaries of aerial mobility and inspire new generations of talent and tech startups in Italy.
