Today marks the launch of the third batch of Venture Catalysts, a Latvian training program designed to foster science-based entrepreneurship. Over 70 researchers, entrepreneurs, and deep tech enthusiasts have applied for this intensive five-week journey focused on commercialization, startup creation, and leadership skill development.

On the program’s first day, participants engaged in introductory activities and attended the inaugural thematic session: “Innovation and Commercialization as Key Drivers in Business.” Experts Andris Baumanis (UniLab), Ella Kalniņa (UniLab), and Agnese Oļševska (LIAA) participated in the session, discussing crucial aspects of building knowledge-intensive businesses – from strategic approaches to commercialization to a broader understanding of the innovation ecosystem in Latvia and beyond.

“Latvia has many talented researchers and inventors whose potential has not yet been fully realized. With the help of Venture Catalysts, we provide them with the opportunity to take the next step – to transform their ideas into real commercial projects. This program encourages and provides the necessary knowledge for scientific ideas to serve the development of our economy,” commented Agnese Oļševska, LIAA’s Deputy Director for Innovation.

The program is organized by UniLab in collaboration with RTU Riga Business School, RISEBA, and LIAA, and is co-financed by European Union funds. The goal of Venture Catalysts is to provide practical tools necessary for the commercialization of research-based innovations. Ten workshops led by experienced experts cover topics such as startup development strategy, leadership, investor attraction, and intellectual property protection, helping participants acquire the necessary skills and confidence to launch deep tech ventures.

“Venture Catalysts is a place where I can share my passion for deep tech technologies, entrepreneurship, and creating real impact. I am here to support researchers and entrepreneurs who want to connect science and business and build startups that truly make a difference,” shared Ella Kalniņa, a Venture Catalysts mentor.

In addition to the sessions, participants have access to mentoring, practical insights from experienced entrepreneurs, and the opportunity to utilize a potential co-founder database comprising professionals with commercial or scientific backgrounds. The program will continue until August 28, fostering a community ready to shape the future of innovation in Latvia.
